G.I. Joe 3 3/4-inch action figures re-emerged in the "New Sculpt" era (2003-2006) and continued into the DTC (Direct To Consumer) exclusives market. One of the fan favorite new characters during this time frame was the G.I. Joe Marksman -- Code Name: BARREL ROLL! He first appeared as a deluxe figure in the Spy Troops line with disguise armor and Air Assault glider. This was followed by a re-deco for the Valor vs. Venom series and a unique version for the DTC collection (see example below). The character was featured in the Devil's Due: G.I. Joe comic series during the Players and Pawns storyline. An interesting detail about the character is that he shares the file name and birthplace of a Hasbro Designer that worked on the G.I. Joe Brand. In fact, he wrote three very inspired file cards about sibling rivalry and had a built-in storyline of his own brother BLACKOUT capturing their sister BOMBSTRIKE for the Cobra Organization. It was a cliff-hanger story for the fans to decide!
His code name is based on a favorite aerial maneuver that produces a 360 degree horizontal spin. As a member of the Air Force: Special Ops Command, his mission is to jump from a plane at an extremely high altitude and free fall until he can deploy his glider system. Then, he must fly low to the ground to avoid enemy radar until he can land at a suitable position. This is where his sniper skills come into play, as he digs in and stays motionless until he scopes his specified target!
G.I. JOE AIR FORCE SPECIAL OPS COMMAND: BARREL ROLL is part of the twelve GIJCC: Figure Subscription Service offerings. This new 25th Anniversary-style carded action figure includes: removable helmet, glider backpack, parachute harness, sniper rifle, pistol, and G.I. Joe figure stand.
